Snow White’s Poison Apples
‘Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?’
Yes, the Disney Gourmet Series is back! Oh, you thought I had given up on that? NO WAY! My Disney obsession will never end and I really enjoy creating dishes that are inspired from my favorite Disney movies.
I knew that I had to have a Disney post for Halloween and, honestly, what better option than Snow White? It is one of the all time classics and it has creepy elements (witch, magic mirror, poison apple) so it made perfect sense! I absolutely love this movie and, if you love it too, good news! I am giving away a $25 iTunes Gift Card so you can buy Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (or other Disney movie… or whatever you want, really!). This Giveaway is in no way affiliated, sponsored by, or approved by Apple. It is me, and only me, with the little money I got, trying to do something nice for my readers! :-) To enter, follow the instructions on the little Rafflecopter window at the end of this post!
If I ever throw a Halloween party, it will definitely be an Evil Queen theme. Wouldn’t that be fun? I can just imagine all the nice decor, the cocktails, the party food and – of course! – these beautiful Poison Apples! You can make them red, like I did (to keep them like the movie’s) or even black or purple (to make them even more poisonous!). But I think Snow White wouldn’t have gone for the black or purple… I mean, she’s naive and all, but she’s not THAT dumb! lol
Speaking of Snow White, her story has become even more popular lately, with live action movies (the one with Charlize Theron being beautiful as the Queen) and with the TV Show Once Upon a Time. But nothing beats the Disney classic movie!
Did you know that Walt Disney first had the idea of telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when he was 15? And then, when it finally happened, they had budgeted the movie at $250,000 but it ended up costing $1.5 million (which was bazillions in the 30s) and he ended up having to mortgage his home to pay for it!!! Poor Walt! But then, the profits from this movie allowed him to build Disney Studios in Burbank! Yay! Happy ending!!!
‘Dip the apple in the brew. Let the Sleeping Death seep through. Look! On the skin! The symbol of what lies within. Now, turn red, to tempt Snow White, to make her hunger for a bite. Have a bite? It’s not for you, it’s for Snow White. When she breaks the tender peel, to taste the apple in my hand, her breath will still, her blood congeal, then I’ll be fairest in the land!‘
I must confess I don’t eat candied apples often. I’m just afraid something will happen to my teeth and we all know how expensive dental treatments are. (Believe me, I broke a tooth before while biting a lollipop! Ugh!) However, I used to love them when I was a kid. In Brazil we call it “maçã do amor”, which translates into “apples of love”. Isn’t that cute? And we usually get them on Valentine’s Day. We have other kinds of candied fruits, like grapes. Oh, how I love candied grapes! They seem somewhat less threatening to my beautiful pearly teeth! lol
The best kind of apple to use for this recipe would be anything firm, crispy and flavorful. I love Fuji apples, so that’s what I use.
Oh, do you see those little bubbles in some of the apples? That usually happens if there’s still any moisture on the apples before you dip them in the candy. They don’t bother me (I think they look extra poisonous!), but if they bother you, make sure you dry them really well beforehand. I also used some gel coloring to make the blood dripping from the apples but you absolutely don’t have to!
Seriously, guys, these Poison Apples will look amazing on your Halloween table! You can also make them to give for trick or treaters because, let’s face it, even though they are coated in sugar, they are still healthier than all those store bought candies. And you can spook the kids saying the Evil Queen sent them! ;-) (Extra points for you if you dress up as the Evil Queen to open the door!)

Snow White's Poison Apples
Ingredients
- 6 Fuji apples, or any other type of firm apples
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- Food coloring, your choice of color! red, black or purple work nicely for poison apples
Instructions
- Wash and dry your apples. If there's any moisture left, bubbles can form when you coat them in the candy. Also, make sure they haven't been waxed.
- Insert bamboo skewers in the apples and set them aside.
- Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and grease the paper with butter.
- In a saucepan, combine the corn syrup, the sugar, the water and the food coloring and, over medium high heat, bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Once the sugar is dissolved, lower the heat to medium and let it boil, without stirring, until it reaches hard crack stage. Temperature should read 300/310 degrees on a candy thermometer. Another way of knowing is to drip some of the candy in a cup with cold water. If the candy solidifies, it is ready.
- Dip the apples into the candy, swirling them to get rid of any excess, and set them in the prepared baking sheet.
- Let them cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
